We visited the old sewer tunnels under London and the huge underground river Madlock in Manchester, which is four times larger in diameter than the largest underground river in Ukraine - Poltva. A large arched tunnel was built at the place, where sewer and lake water mix.

THE SOUND OF THUNDER Our way was barred by a low wall, the space beyond which seemed to be filled with thunder. Up against this parapet dashed a great volume of thick, muddy water, which then made a sudden turn, and swept off through a circular opening on its way to the "middle level" sewer.

When Sir Bazalgette designed his sewage system over 150 years ago the population of London was about 4 million, today it is about 8 million. While it is in a perfect working condition, it can't cope with the amount of sewage. Even 2 mm of rainfall can trigger a discharge of untreated sewage into tidal Thames.
