Glowing Glass Studio Pot Melt

The pot can be washed when new with water and a scrub brush! We like to melt into a stainless steel form with thin fire under it and a piece of glass that fits in the form. Then drip onto it. Makes clean up much easier and no stuck kiln wash! Be sure to read the full tutorials!

This purple fused glass pot-melt I put it on glass then used a frame that can hang or set-up. I think it's pretty great and the background glass highlights the colors of the pot-melt. The yellow fused glass pot-melt I put on a wood frame. The only thing wrong with the yellow piece is I didn't secure it well enough and it moved.

The idea behind a pot melt is to fill an upper chamber with scraps of fusible glass, then melt it at a high temperature so the glass liquifies and drips from the upper chamber to either a mold or kiln shelf below.

It is often talked about as a great way to use leftover pieces of glass or as a way to recycle a failed project. This technique has been on my "to-try" list for a long time. The basic process involves suspending a clay pot with a hole, or multiple holes, in the bottom of it over a kiln shelf.

Great way to use scrap glass. Line your stainless steel forms with 1/8" fiber paper. Where the ends meet put a small piece of scrap thinfire behind the seam as insurance. Put the form on thinfire or a well kiln washed shelf. Be sure the 1/8" is pushed all the way to the shelf leaving no gaps.

An aperture pour (or pot melt, pot drop, or shelf melt) is a method to create an organic, swirly, interesting mixture of glasses using a kiln. The basic idea is to fill a flower pot with a mixture of glasses, and heat it very hot so that the molten glass has a low enough viscosity to pour through the hole (or aperture) in the bottom of the pot.

I've been SOOOO eager to try a pot melt, and so here we go! I wanted to just use this as a learning opportunity first, so this was never intended to be a goo.

Pot melts can be done in a few ways.one way is to support the pot over a heavily kiln washed shelf with stilts. I use regular kiln stilts with a slice of kiln shelf across them. (An old broken kiln shelf will slice easily with a wet tile saw.) Fill the pot with scrap glass and fire up the kiln. ( Firing schedules later!)
